The key principle of treating the old building without complicated structural interventions is enclosing the exterior light well into the interior courtyard. By doing so, one achieve not only spatial extension, but also easier and better arranged circulation and more generous common space.
We have designed a development strategy based on a new independent building in the place of the small gym on the south side of the plot. This building is connected with the main building on all floors, yet it gives the impression of an independent building. Underneath the existing exterior courtyard we have designed a full size gym/assembly hall accessible by lower ground floor, which is the main connecting space between the two buildings.
